The sunflower symbolises joy and vitality. In some spiritual traditions, the way it turns to follow the sun represents the quest for the divine, for enlightenment, and for a life focused on what is essential. In Chinese culture, it symbolises long life and good luck.
It is native to North America and has been cultivated since 1000 BC. It had many uses, and different parts of the plant were used for food and medicine.
Van Gogh painted them compulsively. For him, they represented life and friendship, and brought warmth and optimism. Indeed, because of their size, height and abundance, they have the power to bring joy even on the greyest of days. This drawing is a celebration of life and a reminder for those days when we need to see the sun shine.
